FORT JACKSON, S.C. -- Sgt. 1st Class Terry Anderson has collected about 30 coins of recognition since his time at Fort Jackson's NCO Academy.
"People give them to me when I fix something for them, correct their pay, things like that," said Anderson, who also teaches a financial management course at the academy.
Anderson is good at what he does because he demands the best from himself. He said his guiding principle can be summed up in one phrase: "Carrying the load."
"That just means understanding that life is not fair. And whatever your load is, you should be able to carry it," he said.
Anderson said his mother greatly influenced his outlook and is the reason he became a Soldier.
"She was in the military, the Army, she was a 42A (a human resources specialist)." Anderson's mother served in the Army for more than 20 years. "And she provided us a good, stable home."
In his 10 years in the Army, Anderson has had assignments at Fort Campbell, Ky.; Hohenfels, Germany; and Fort Bragg, N.C. He deployed to Kosovo in 2002 and Iraq in 2006.
When he retires, Anderson said he plans to go into real estate.
He has this advice for junior enlisted: "Stay hungry with their career goals. Don't get complacent."
