FORT JACKSON, S.C. -- At his core, 1st Sgt. Mark Newlin believes every Soldier should do his or her very best.
"Never give up, and always strive hard for what you believe is right. It will pay off in the long run," Newlin said.
Newlin said one of his most memorable experiences was during a tour in Iraq. In 2006, Newlin received a Silver Star for his bravery in battle.
Newlin said he is the Soldier that he is today because of his leaders and senior NCOs.
"I would say, every senior NCO I ever worked for (had an impact on me)," he said. "They were always doing the right thing and (they) set the example for others to follow."
Newlin has served in the Army for 14 years. He has deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. He has had previous assignments at Fort Polk, La.; Darmstadt, Germany; Mannheim, Germany; Fort Drum, N.Y.; and Friedberg, Germany.
Beyond, and in addition to, his military career, Newlin is planning to further his education and earn a bachelor's degree.
He advises junior enlisted to: "Always do what is right, even when no one is looking. Always set the example for the younger Soldiers to follow. Future leaders of the Army are developed by the senior leaders of today."
