Outdoor Recreation will bring a taste of summer to Kings Pond with a Hawaiian-style Christmas party Dec. 5. Fort Benning's first Island Christmas Party is 2 to 5 p.m.

"This isn't your typical Christmas party," said Brittany Beadle, Outdoor Recreation specialist. "We'll have a Hawaiian shirt contest, build your own cheeseburger in paradise and a Jimmy Buffet trivia contest."

"Most people talk about Christmas in July. This is a taste of summer in December."

The shirt contest will be judged on tackiness, originality and creativity.

"There is no telling what kind of Hawaiian shirts we will see," Beadle games including volleyball, corn hole, horseshoes and board games, and Outdoor Recreation will provide canoes, kayaks and paddleboats for use free of charge.

"This party is a good way for people to get in the holiday spirit," said Hines, who came up with the idea to have the Hawaiian-themed party at Fort Benning after she saw one similar somewhere else.

Participants are welcome to bring dogs, coolers and fishing poles--.

The free event is open to the public. Registration by Dec. 4 is preferred, but not required.
