FORT LEE, Va. (Nov. 3, 2009) -- Transportation Corps Soldiers were jubilant in victory after they were announced the winners of the inaugural Sustainment Bowl on Oct. 30. The team of transporters, who participated in events as varied as racquetball and a relay race, gathered on the field of Williams Stadium at Fort Lee, Va., to celebrate the historic win.

"It almost goes without saying how proud I am today of our team," said Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel Reid, 8th Transportation Brigade command sergeant major. "It's been amazing just to watch them help each other out all day, push each other to win. Even in losing some events, I saw how they would go out and congratulate those who beat them. I couldn't be prouder."

It wasn't easy for Brig. Gen. Jesse R. Cross, Quartermaster School commanding general, to yield the championship trophy to another corps - his quartermasters finished third. He acknowledged that everyone would leave as winners, knowing they came together as a community of sustainers.

"It's real healthy to take time out of our busy schedules to put on events like this," said Cross. "What we do is important as a sustainment community ... and what this is all about today is teamwork."

The event began in 1974 as the Logistics Bowl. Rotating between quartermaster, ordnance and transportation posts, the event grew from a single flag football tournament to a daylong "Olympic" style format.

While the history of the former Logistics Bowl is sketchy, and the whereabouts of the original trophy remain unknown after 1984, the Sustainment Bowl sought to restore a tradition - one that brought camaraderie and esprit de corps among the sustainment community.

"Overall, the event was a great success," said Lt. Col. Stephen Davis, operations chief at the Quartermaster School. "All those from Team Lee that worked with SCoE were excellent with the support they provided the command to make the Sustainment Bowl an outstanding day. There was significant participation from all the schools within SCoE and branch pride could be seen from all teams."

The Ordnance Corps team finished second, two points ahead of the quartermaster team. The Sustainment Center of Excellence headquarters placed fourth and the Soldier Support Institute finished last.
