ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. - Anniston Army Depot visited students at Coldwater Elementary School on Oct. 20 as part of the national Red Ribbon Week, the oldest drug prevention campaign in the United States.

The Red Ribbon Celebration was started by The National Family Partnership in 1980 due to responses to the rising level of youth drug use in America.

The mission of the NFP is nurturing parents to help children reach their full potential. The NFP works to accomplish its mission through parent training, parent networking and sponsoring the National Red Ribbon Campaign.

The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs recognized the Red Ribbon Events during the week of Oct. 23, as did ANAD. Every employee at the depot received a Red Ribbon pin and a key chain light to commemorate support in reducing drug use in the workplace and homes. The theme for this year is "Drug Free is the Key."

At Coldwater, staff members of the Directorate of Community and Family Activities spoke with students about the effects of drug use in children and adults and why Red Ribbon Week is observed.

Red Ribbon Week commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "KiKi" Camarena, who died in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.
