In hard times, the ability to effectively handle physical and mental stress can mean the difference between good health and debilitating illness.

To help provide information and techniques on combating these stress, the Fort McPherson Wellness Center staff hosted a Holistic Health and Wellness Day event Sept. 10.

"If a person is well mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually, they're less likely to hurt themselves," said Eric Powell, prevention education coordinator at the Wellness Center.

As part of the preventive measures showcased, the event had presenters on topics like massage, reflexology, acupuncture, body detoxification, aerobics, yoga and more, said Alcana Morris, drug testing coordinator at the Wellness Center.

Donna Dowdell, a doctor specializing in holistic nutrition, was one such presentor. Dowdell, who works in Conyers, bases much of her knowledge on African and Indian cultures. Like these cultures of old, she spoke of how people can get back to Earth and nature to help ease ailments.

"A lot of people are frustrated with current ways (of treating illnesses)," she said of the shift to more natural medicines.

Many foods today contain additives that can cause problems, Dowdell added.

"We need to learn how to use food as a medicine," Dowdell said.

Representatives from the Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem commissaries were on hand to display some options for better food choices.

Overall, Morris said the event helped increase knowledge and awareness of holistic approaches to health and wellness for members of the Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem communities.
