Labor Day Holiday Safety Message 2009

1. Labor Day weekend is a time to celebrate the contributions that American workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Many of us will celebrate this joyous occasion with Family and friends. Holiday celebrations mean more travel and increased recreational activities which increases the risk of accidents. Let's use comprehensive risk assessments and countermeasures to help prevent accidents on and off duty this Labor Day.

2. Leaders must ensure that everyone in their care understands the risk invovled with any activity. Privately owned vehicle (POV) accidents present the greatest threat to our safety. The following prevention programs can help you identify and reduce hazards:

a. POV Sensing Sessions. Discuss previous accident experiences (e.g., trends, contributing factors, control measures) within your organization, emphasizing the Designated Driver Program.

b. Ensure Soldiers use the TRiPS system prior to driving long distances.

c. Safety Briefings. Leaders will conduct safety briefings prior to the holiday. Suggested topics are: driving precautions in heavy traffic, speeding, failing to wear seatbelts and using child restraint devices, driving while impaired, fatigue, and distractions can all contribute to fatal collisions and serious injuries.

3. While enjoying water-related activities, remember that with these activities comes added responsibilities. Don't swim alone and only swim in approved swimming areas. When temperatures are extreme, take necessary precautions to reduce the possibility of heat injuries by drinking plenty of water and not over doing outdoor activities.

4. We can all do our patr to protect lives by exercising risk mitigation and looking out for each other. Let's work together to protect our most valuable resources: America's Soldiers, Civilians, and their Families.
