If you're looking for fresh fruits and vegetables, try visiting the Farmer's Market on post each Wednesday.

The NASA Exchange - Marshall Space Flight Center's counterpart to an Army employee morale organization - holds the NASA Farmer's Market every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the south parking lot of building 4203. You'll see it under the big oak trees at that big NASA building on Rideout Road.

"It's all types of fresh fruits and vegetables," NASA Exchange manager Bill Mayo said. "All the farmers are local, from north Alabama and we have one from southern Tennessee. There's sweet potatoes, corn, okra, beans, peas, cucumber, squash. There's lots of stuff coming in right now."

The market started in May and will continue until probably the end of October, depending on whether the farmers still have produce for sale.

This was an idea of the NASA Exchange council.

"We just thought it would be a convenient, neat idea for the employees that work out here," Mayo said.

The farmers have pre-arranged with Mayo to participate. "They have to have a business license," he said. "We have one who's certified organic so he's got all the certification the state requires."

Usually seven or eight farmers participate; and Mayo isn't looking for more signups. "I probably have about 15 on my waiting list," he said.

But everyone is welcome to stop by and shop for fruits and vegetables.

"We definitely have some Army employees coming by," Mayo said.

Karen Fowler, a technical resource manager for the Space Shuttle, walked to the outdoor market Aug. 26 from building 4202. She shopped there last year, and this was her first time this year.

"I think it's wonderful and everything out here looks really fresh," she said.
