August 28, 2009
After serving as the XVIII Airborne Corps Special Troops Battalion command sergeant major for the last two years, Command Sgt. Maj. Leroy Chaney handed responsibility to Command Sgt. Maj. Tonya Griffin in a ceremony held on Throckmorton Field at 10a.m. Aug. 27.
"The Command Sergeant Major...is charged with the responsibility to keep the good order, fitness and readiness of our Soldiers and care of our families," said Lt. Col. Peter S. Im, commander, XVIII Airborne Corps STB. "I cannot express how evident and successful this has been over the past two years under Command Sgt. Maj. Leroy Chaney."
Chaney, a native of Canton, Miss., arrived shortly before the Corps' last deployment to Iraq and quickly established a leadership tone and climate that can be characterized as quiet professionalism, Im said.
During the deployment Chaney lead the execution of the STB's transformation with the welfare of his Soldiers always in mind.
"Since my arrival and becoming a part of the Sky Dragon team...I have watched the leaders, NCOs, Soldiers and civilians of the Corps headquarters do some amazing things," Chaney said. "It has been a true honor to be a part of such a history-making team."
"To Command Sgt. Maj. Griffin...you are getting a great team of Soldiers, NCOs, officers and civilians," Chaney said.
Griffin, a native of St. Augustine, Fla, said she is eager to make a positive contribution to the organization and she looks forward to her new responsibilities and working with the members of the STB.
"I hope to be a value-added asset for the team," Griffin said.
