Twenty-two teams of four players each enjoyed sunshine and fellowship on a nearly-new golf course Aug. 7 at the second quarterly Presidio of Monterey golf outing. Monterey Pines golf course, which re-opened July 25 for full-time play after being closed for a lengthy renovation, hosted the POM golfers.

According to Cliff Thornburg, tournament organizer, the course is in pristine condition. Thornburg said that in addition to garrison teams, he had teams from the Air Force element, DLIFLC, Fresno Army Recruiting Station, HHC, RCI, the E-9 Association, and the Naval Postgraduate School, among others, participate.

Colonel Darcy Brewer, garrison commander, first thanked everyone for doing their jobs every day and then for showing up to participate in the tournament.

Sam Jepsen, course general manager and PGA professional, set out the rules for the tournament and his desires for conduct on the course. He was justifiably proud of the course's new look and wanted to maintain it.

Then it was 22 groups heading to every hole on the course to begin play! When the last putt was in the cup, 1st Place went to: Don Summers, Bob Hammel, Bernie Tachney, and Ray Austin, a local group of military retirees.

Second Place went to: Steve Bailey, Robert Thompson, Mark Minell, and Sergio Barrientos from the Fresno, Calif. Recruiting office. Robert Thompson from Fresno and Frank Alba from NPS won the closest to the pin competitions on holes seven and 11.

And the longest drive hole, number one, was taken by "Let the Shaft out and let it Fly" Cliff Thornburg, a repeat winner from the first tournament.
