SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill., Aug. 3, 2009 - Two SDDC Soldiers earned honors from Army Materiel Command during the major command's annual Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year competition. The AMC Soldiers and NCOs competed alongside those from the National Capital Region at Fort A.P. Hill, July 20.

SDDC's Spc. Darwynn McPherson is named the 2009 Army Materiel Command Soldier of the Year. With this significant accomplishment under his belt, McPherson will now compete at Army-level for Soldier of the Year in late September.

McPherson graduated from Leroy High School and entered the Army in July 2003. He is transportation management coordinator assigned to the 688th Rapid Port Opening Element at Ft. Eustis, Va. McPherson earned top honors after the weeklong competition including marksmanship; specific Soldier, combat, and life saving skills, urban warfare and other warrior tasks.

Sgt. Billy Richardson, a cargo specialist also with 688th RPOE, is named Runner-Up of the 2009 Army Materiel Command Noncommissioned Officer of the Year. Richardson entered the Army in October 2003. He is a cargo specialist assigned to the 688th Transportation Battalion, Rapid Port Opening Element at Ft. Eustis, Va.

SDDC welcomed the 688th RPOE, along with the 689th RPOE, into its family during a patch changing ceremony held May 15 at the command's Fort Eustis facility. The ceremony signified the transfer of authority of the 688th and 689th from the 7th Sustainment Brigade to the 597th Transportation Terminal Group.

SDDC headquarters is located at Scott Air Force Base and its mission is to provide global surface deployment and distribution services to meet the nation's objectives.
