Jason Kearney, FMWR partnership specialist, is bringing this fledgling program together and explains what youths can expect when they begin living on The Edge!

"The Edge! is a brand new Child, Youth and School Services program that partners with other FMWR programs to bring exciting new activities and events to the kids in first through 12th grade," said Kearney.

"One of our first activities is going to be the Golf Edge, where kids will be able to go up to the golf course and learn all there is to know about golf, from how to tee up to how to putt onto the greens. This'll be a good program for kids from first to 12th grade," said Kearney.

"The cost is going to mirror what the costs are currently for Child Youth and School Services. For the middle school and teens, that's sixth grade and up, there will be no cost whatsoever to the children. However for the School-Age Services, it will be $5 an hour, so the cost will vary depending on how many times the class meets and how long it runs."

"We're also going to have the Dramatic Edge which will be a thespian program that we're going to do," After the children audition and rehearse the play, they will end the program by performing for the community. "It should be a lot of fun," said Kearney.

The Dramatic Edge program will also offer children an opportunity to participate as theater technicians, so they can learn all there is to know about that side of the thespian world. "They can learn how to build sets, do lighting, sound, all that kind of stuff," said Kearney.

Bowling is also on the list of Edge activities. "We're going to have a youth bowling league in Bowlopolis. The kids can come and learn about bowling and just have a good time out there on the lanes," said Kearney.

Library partnership
The partnership with the library will offer children an opportunity to learn the art of storytelling. "The kids will learn how to tell a story and make it interesting for their peers.

"We've got a lot of other programs in the works as well. We're going to do a program with the entertainment division that will build a haunted mansion. The kids will be able to build and star in their own haunted mansion.

"We're going to do that from Oct. 1 to 31 in partnership with the MWR entertainment division," said Kearney.

The children will build a haunted maze from the ground up. "During the last week before Halloween they're going to staff that maze and scare the begeebeez out of Baumholder.

"We're also going to work with the Auto Crafts Shop and offer vehicle repair and maintenance classes," said Kearney.

One of the more unique classes The Edge! will offer is the catering and decorating class. "We're going to partner with the Rheinlander to offer this class," said Kearney.

The first class will be Golf Edge. "You can sign up now at CYSS central registration. Their number is mil 485-7003. The other programs will be coming on line shortly.

"The Edge! will offer really good community-type events as well as hopefully help build lifelong skills like golfing or fishing, hiking, fitness skills - just things that will really benefit children for a lifetime.

"So we have a lot of other exciting things coming up like aquatics, arts and crafts. There's no end to all the fun things we can do with MWR programs," said Kearney.
