• Dr. Nancy Sebring wipes away a tear as Maj. Gen. Robert M. Radin, commanding general, U.S. Army Sustainment Command, presents a Silver Star Medal her father earned 65 years ago. Sebring, the Des Moines, Iowa , public school superintendent, and her siblings, Nina Rasmusson (behind Radin), Jim Rasmusson and Linda Saveraid (out of frame), accepted the medal at American Legion Post No. 334 in McCallsburg, Iowa, May 25. Rasmusson earned the medal based on his actions as a Soldier with the 90th Infantry Division in World War II. Unfortunately, the paperwork was lost, then presumed destroyed when a large portion of the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis was gutted by fire in 1973. Sebring approached retired Brig. Gen. J. Daniel McGowan, an Iowa civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army, to see if the paperwork could be reinstated. With assistance from Lt. Col. Brad Dostal, commander of the Minneapolis Recruiting Battalion, the award was eventually approved. Although Harry Rasmusson passed away in July 2008, family members said they were honored to receive the medal as part of the town's Memorial Day celebration.
