  • BAGHDAD-Spc. David Riha, a generator mechanic in Forward Support Troop D, 1st "Garryowen" Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, the 1st Brigade Combat Team, and the 1st Cavalry Division, reaches into the compartment of a generator while conducting routine maintenance. All of the electrical power at JSS Istiqlal in central Iraq is provided by generators. Large generators maintained by contractors supply the main power grid for the installation. Individual support sections such as food service and troop maintenance teams have their own. Most of these generators do not run all day long, but regular preventive maintenance is necessary to prevent breakdowns. Preventive maintenance is especially important during the summer, where the Iraqi heat can cause failure, even in well-maintained equipment.
