Polo matches were commonly played on Hedekin Field in the 1920s and 1930s. The parade ground is named after Capt. David Drew Hedekin, an avid polo player who commanded Headquarters Command at Fort McPherson from 1936 until 1938. Hedekin was fatally injured while playing in a polo tournament at Fort Oglethorpe July 17, 1938.

Polo has not been played on Hedekin Field since 1981
