Sgt. Jennifer Vega Perez - April 2009 NCO of the Year

Sgt. Vega is an Administrative Specialist assigned to the 166th Headquarters and Headquarters Company. The Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico native first joined the service in 1998 attending Basic Training and AlT at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

She has a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from American University, Manati Puerto Rico. Her most memorable military experience so far has been - "My experience in Iraq. When I was in theater, my primary job was working with all inbound and outbound mail the postal unit is the most important unit in theater. All Soldiers are waiting for mail and messages from their loved ones in the rear," she said. "I also worked in the airport in Talil, South Iraq. My responsibilities were to meet the arriving Soldiers and in-process them by assigning them to their respective duties. I also assisted with the out-processing of the redeploying Soldiers and when they went on R & R, leave or emergency leave. We processed about 11,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and other Coalition Forces members."

Reflecting on the Army, she said, "This is the best way to get an opportunity to work with other federal agencies. As a Reserve Soldier in a Troop Program Unit Status, you have the opportunity to go to school and study and enhance your career. Your experiences in the Army can be utilized in your civilian life. It has been the best decision that I have made for me and my family," she said.

As an Army NCO she said, "The role of the NCO is very important in today's Army is vital for the success of the mission and even more special now that we are fighting a war against terrorism We have more responsibilities with the Soldiers, the mission, the unit and everything."
