Soldiers can have a very postive effect on students young and old when they take the time to serve as mentors for the school system
Staff Sgt. Daniel Moyer of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band discusses an orchestral percussion piece with Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School student Adam Landis during an April 7 band mentorship event at Fort Monroe, Va. The Sullivan students from nearby Virginia Beach spent three hours with the military musicians. Capt. Derrick Shaw, band commander, and 2nd Lt. Richard Winkels, executive officer, shared their expertise while conducting the group. The band frequently mentors college and grade school music groups. Some are even invited to perform with the band during their regularly scheduled concerts at Fort Monroe.
