FORT MEADE, Md. - The Soldiers' Chorus, a component of The United States Army Field Band, will present an emotional and captivating concert that pays tribute to African-American composers, such as Nathaniel Dett, Hall Johnson, Evelyn La Rue Pittman, Deidre Robinson and David Baker.
The "Shout for Joy!" concert takes place at 8 p.m., April 24, 2009, at Morgan State University's Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center.
The performance will feature guest conductor Dr. Robert L. Morris, celebrated composer, arranger and foremost expert on African-American choral tradition. Dr. Morris is the founder and artistic director for the Leigh Morris Chorale, whose performances educate audiences on African-American classical and written choral music traditions and has served as director of choral activities at Winston-Salem State University and Jackson State University.
Additional guest appearances include the Morgan State University Choir, as well as MSU organ professor, Dr. Samuel Springer.
The Soldiers' Chorus, conducted by 1st Lt. Curtis Kinzey, is a 29-member mixed choral ensemble comprised of active-duty Army Noncommissioned Officers, many of whom are graduates of our Nation's finest conservatories and music schools. The musical background of each Soldier-musician adds to the choral ensemble's range and diversity. It is this versatility that has earned the Soldiers' Chorus an international reputation for presenting musical excellence and inspiring patriotism.
