Did you know that you could file a claim with the Army and receive compensation for theft and vandalism of a privately owned vehicle?

American-owned vehicles are often easy targets; however, there are simple steps owners can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim.

Vehicle theft prevention, like all crime prevention, involves limiting the criminal's ability and/or opportunity to commit the crime. When possible, park the vehicle in a secure location. Alternatively, park the vehicle in a well-lit public location. Avoid leaving the vehicle in an underutilized or unattended lot, especially if your vehicle will be parked and unattended for an extended time, such as when you are going on leave or to the field.

No matter where you park, always lock the vehicle and do not leave personal property in plain sight. If you must leave valuable items inside, place them out of sight before reaching the destination, or lock items in the glove box or trunk.

If you experience a POV theft or vandalism on a military installation or at your assigned quarters, be sure to document the loss. Report the incident to the appropriate authorities as soon as you notice the loss or damage.

Those who file a claim with the Military Claims Office must produce "clear and convincing" evidence that the damage to the POV is the result of theft or vandalism occurring at assigned quarters or on the military installation.

Before moving the vehicle, take pictures at the scene to clearly indicate the damage and location where the loss or damage occurred. For example: photos of glass on the ground, next to the vehicle, with your house in the background. Do not move the vehicle until you are satisfied you have collected enough evidence to meet this standard.

File a claim first with your private insurer if your insurance policy covers vehicle theft or vandalism. Once the insurer has settled the claim, you may file a claim with the local Military Claims Office. All claimants are required to furnish a copy of the insurance settlement letter or claim denial when their claim is filed. The claims office will then investigate and adjudicate the claim pursuant to applicable rules and regulations.

For more information on POV theft and vandalism claims, contact your local Military Claims Office. Soldiers or Department of the Army civilians in Vicenza should contact the Vicenza Claims Office, Building 166, DSN 637-8831/32, comm. 0444-61-8831/32.
