DURHAM, North Carolina -- (Feb. 24, 2017) Soldiers from the Mission and Installation Contracting Command's 900th Contracting Battalion at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, participated in a dynamic leadership professional development event Feb. 13 at Duke University.
The faculty and staff of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business in Durham served as host for the Soldiers.
The LPD was led by two professors. Joseph N.G. LeBeouf, professor of the practice of management, is a retired Army colonel who served as a professor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he was the deputy head of the behavioral sciences and leadership department. His counterpart was Sim Sitkin, a professor of leadership and management at the Michael W. Krzyzewski University as well as founding faculty director of the Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics at the Fuqua School of Business, and director of the behavioral science and policy center at Duke University.
LeBeouf used an oil painting depicting the gallant charge of the 20th Maine down the western slope of Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg as the catalyst for the LPD. The professors introduced the Soldiers to the six domains of leadership, a model developed by Duke University that is used for developing and assessing leadership qualities. The professors organized the Soldiers into small groups to analyze a video case study through the lens of the six domains of leadership. This case study illustrated how the principles of the six domains of leadership could be applied to everyday leadership challenges.
The leadership pyramid, comprised of the six domains of leadership, is structured to show how the principles of this model interconnect and influence each other. When these principles are applied to an individual or organizational leadership challenge, the strengths and weaknesses of an individual or organization become clear.
"This was truly a thought provoking and insightful event," said Sgt. 1st Class Samantha Brown, the 608th Contracting Team noncommissioned officer in charge. "LPDs usually produce good information, but in this case we actually walked away with another tool in our kit bag."
The 900th CBN commander and sergeant major presented certificates of appreciation to the Duke University professors and faculty for the effort that was put into the event. Following the awards presentation, Soldiers of the 900th CBN were then taken on a guided tour of the campus, which included the Duke University Chapel and a private viewing of Cameron Indoor Stadium -- the battle ground for the Duke University men's basketball team.
"This was not only a great LPD, but also a great team building event that the Soldiers will remember for a long time," said Maj. Jermaine Pruitt, the 900th CBN operations officer.
Duke administrators cite the Fuqua School of Business as one of the leading business schools in the world known for its academic rigor and diverse student body, which exposes students to creative new ideas and world views. The Fuqua School of Business class of 2018 had an average Graduate Management Admission Test score of 695 and a student body that was more than 40 percent international.
The 900th CBN is comprised of the battalion headquarters and contracting teams co-located with the MICC-Fort Bragg contracting office in North Carolina. In fiscal 2016, MICC-Fort Bragg and the 900th CBN executed 1,820 contract actions valued at more than $295 million. They are subordinate to the 419th Contracting Support Brigade that along with the two additional brigades and a field directorate office make up the MICC.
