On the night of Jan. 21, a power outage occurred in the battalion tactical operations center. Both Simmons and Clark, of Gulfport, Miss., lost power in their living quarters and immediately realized night shift personnel were not familiar with contingency measures and would need assistance.

Both of the Soldiers sprung into action and successfully instructed personnel on the proper initiation and recovery procedures. Their actions ultimately secured the safety of two combat patrols; consisting of 52 Soldiers on mission in Baghdad at the time.
