TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT, Pa. - Students from the Scranton State School for the Deaf observed depot employees James Boos and Laura Dumback on Feb. 10 as part of the third annual Shadow Day Program. The students also visited the depot on Nov. 12, Dec. 10 and Jan. 7 to learn about career opportunities available here.

The days were designed to spark students' interest in careers that they may not have previously considered, explained John Sutkowsky, Equal Employment Opportunity manager. "The program shows students that their career choices are not limited, and if they work hard enough they can have a job and career they enjoy," he said.

The students shadowed four depot personnel: Dumback, supply technician; Boos, illustrator; David Zeplin, electronics mechanic; and Tom Grabousky, sheet metal mechanic. Employees introduced the students to various depot jobs and suggested areas of study to focus on in order to obtain those jobs.

Sutkowsky said some students expressed an interest in electronics. He also noted that a fourth Tobyhanna Army Depot Shadow Day program is planned.

Tobyhanna Army Depot is the largest full-service Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance maintenance and logistics support facility in the Department of Defense. Employees repair, overhaul and fabricate electronics systems and components, from tactical field radios to the ground terminals for the defense satellite communications network.

Tobyhanna's missions support all branches of the Armed Forces. The depot is the Army Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Communications-Electronics, Avionics, and Missile Guidance and Control Systems and the Air Force Technology Repair Center for ground communications and electronics.

About 5,700 personnel are employed at Tobyhanna, which is located in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. Tobyhanna Army Depot is part of the U.S. Army CECOM Life Cycle Management Command.

Headquartered at Fort Monmouth, N.J., the command's mission is to research, develop, acquire, field and sustain communications, command, control, computer, intelligence, electronic warfare and sensors capabilities for the Armed Forces.
