INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- The Lake City Army Ammunition plant was awarded for exceptional service with the Army's Superior Unit Award during an official ceremony, held here, April 13.

The Army Superior Unit Award is a decoration established by the Secretary of the Army, and is awarded to an Army unit that displays outstanding meritorious performance in a difficult and challenging mission, carried out under extraordinary circumstances.

The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, a subordinate installation of the Joint Munitions Command, earned this distinction by successfully providing ammunition and logistics support during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation New Dawn in Iraq, from October 1, 2011, through September 30, 2012.

"The success of the mission was accomplished by the management at Joint Munitions Command Headquarters, Rock Island, Illinois, through the network of ammunition installations accomplishing ammunition production, storage, supply, maintenance, demilitarization and training," stated the citation from the Department of the Army.

Joint Munitions Command manages a nationwide network of 14 industrial base installations including LCAAP, at which conventional ammunition is produced and stored.

"Today is a great day to reflect on Lake City Army Ammunition Plant's support to the Joint Warfighter," said Lt. Col. Shane Upton, LCAAP commander. "The LCAAP workforce consists of talented and dedicated professionals who provide quality small-caliber ammunition to units deployed in harms way throughout the world. Today, that dedication is rewarded in the form of the Army Superior Unit Award. I'm proud to acknowledge the efforts of our team by accepting this streamer and award."

During the award's timeframe in fiscal year 2012, JMC met 99.7 percent of its delivery requirements for 414,000 short tons of ammunition throughout the world in support of combat operations. JMC also met 100 percent of required delivery dates for mobilization training and 99.7 percent of home station training requirements.

The Joint Munitions Command was recognized for its extensive efforts to account for the ammunition stockpile around the world, to meet ammunition requirements, to upgrade ammunition quality, to redistribute assets and to supply the Warfighter with standard or urgent ammo requirements. In fiscal year 2012, JMC accounted for 2.6 million tons of ammunition and missiles in storage around the world, valued at over $39 billion, and executed an overall budget of approximately $4 billion.

Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, managed by the Joint Munitions Command, conducts contract oversight and provides quality small-caliber munitions to the Warfighter and operates the North Atlantic Treaty Organization test center. JMC produces small-, medium- and large-caliber ammunition items for the Department of Defense. It provides conventional ammunition, from bunker-buster bombs to rifle rounds, to America's fighting forces. JMC is the sustainment and logistics integrator for life-cycle management of ammunition and provides a global presence of technical support to U.S. combat units wherever they are stationed or deployed. JMC's sustainment and logistics operation is unique to the Department of Defense and its industrial base is an important asset in supporting the Warfighter.
