BAUMHOLDER, Germany -- Soldiers from U.S. and partnering nations are competing for the coveted U.S. Army Europe Expert Field Medical Badge at Lager Aulenbach, near Baumholder, Germany, from 14-24.

A total of 195 candidates from across United States Army Europe (USAREUR), Denmark, Slovenia, United Kingdom, Kosovo, Germany, Greece, and Poland are competing for the badge. Historically, this event is hosted twice a year at Grafenwoehr, Germany, but this iteration, hosted by 421st Medical Battalion (Multifunctional), 30th Medical Brigade, will be the first time the USAREUR EFMB is being held at Lager Aulenbach, a German military training area.

A Guidon ceremony kicked off the start of the competition on March 13 where candidates were divided into four platoons and each platoon shouted their motto as they received their Guidon from Lt. Col. Roy Vernon, the 421st Med. Bn. Commander, and Command Sgt. Major Jennifer Francis, the 421st Med. Bn. Senior enlisted leader.

The USAREUR EFMB consists of standardization week from March 14-18 where candidates will learn what tasks are required to earn the badge such as land navigation, triaging multiple patients based on the severity of their injuries, to include a comprehensive written exam. Testing starts March 19 with the final task on March 24 to complete a 12-mile ruck march within three hours.
