ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (March 15, 2016) -- As part of its Open Campus collaboration initiative, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory met with industry, academia and government representatives March 4 with a goal of building a consortium.

Dr. Rob Carter and LJ Holmes, from the ARL Weapons and Materials Research Directorate, hosted representatives from the Maryland Department of Commerce, Orbital ATK, Lehigh University and 3D Systems.

"These organizations, along with several other university and industry partners, are building a consortium that will include physical space at Aberdeen Proving Ground," Holmes said. "ARL will collaborate with this consortium to decrease time-to-market of manufacturing R&D."

As part of the program, Industry and academic partners would place their research equipment and personnel on the military installation in order to collaborate side-by-side with ARL subject-matter experts on materials development and process engineering research related to advanced manufacturing technologies.

"This has potential to impact the Defense, Aerospace, Automotive and Medical industries and beyond," he said.

The ARL Open Campus initiative enables collaborative engagement in existing ARL facilities.

"It is widely acknowledged that innovation depends on bringing multiple disciplines together to engage in collaborative projects that often yield unpredictable, but highly productive results," said ARL Director Dr. Thomas Russell. "Formal and informal interactions among scientists lead to knowledge-building and research breakthroughs. That's why we want to collaborate with academic, government, small business and industry partners."
