WIESBADEN, Germany -- Army Europe announced the winners of the Eisenhower Professional Writing Competition, here, Jan. 13, during the U.S. Army Europe Commanders' Conference.
A total of 70 articles were submitted from more than 20 different units, commands and organizations assigned or attached to U.S. Army Europe, each covering a wide array of topics from the perspective of junior noncommissioned officers up to the level of senior field-grade officers.
Taking home the top honors was Col. Gary Graves for "Seek, Develop, and Share… Multinational Understanding."
Graves is the senior fires trainer at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, headquartered in Hohenfels, Germany.
Second place was awarded to Capt. Christopher Elam for "Strong Europe, Strong Project Engineers."
Elam is the logistics officer in charge for the 15th Engineer Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, which is based out of Grafenwoehr, Germany.
Elam wrote on the past year's challenges of logistically and financially supporting approximately 120 different engineering missions spanning over six countries, a project he says took ample planning.
Third place was awarded to Staff Sgt. Jesse Kelley for "The Psychology of Warfighting Function."
Kelley is a psychological operations noncommissioned officer assigned to 2nd Calvary Regiment, based out of Vilseck, Germany.
"I think I wrote about a topic that not a lot of people were going to write about," Kelley said. "I wrote about the warfighting function of engagement, which is brand new. It a mysterious topic that not many know a lot about."
"This is milestone in my career that I never thought I would get to," Kelley said.
The Eisenhower Writing Competition encourages Soldiers from within U.S. Army Europe to share their expertise, knowledge and experiences by writing and publishing professional articles.
Winning articles are chosen by the command team as having the most positive effect on the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Europe.
