ANSBACH, Germany (Nov. 25, 2015) -- The Ansbach Education Center held the kick-off for American Education Week Monday at its location at Katterbach Kaserne.

As part of the event, participants ate chili, and the U.S. Army Garrison command sergeant major, the center's education services officer, and several Soldiers cut a cake with a ceremonial sword.

Command Sgt. Maj. Mark A. Kiefer spoke at the beginning of the event to the attendees.

"The Army trains us to do a lot of things, but when you have an education -- a formal education -- it's one thing that no matter where you go or what you do, it will go with you," said Kiefer.

Kiefer also emphasized the value of education within the Army as a career, recounting how when he served on a promotion board at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he "put a premium" on education.

"If you're going to move on and upwards in the Army, if you're going to contribute, you've got to seek an education," said Kiefer.

"It helps Soldiers learn what's available here in their Ansbach Education Center," said Irina McNemee, the center's education services officer, of the event. "At this event we're hoping to get people more interested in the various programs."

Michael Spruell, the associate dean of Europe Operations for Central Texas College, also attended the opening event. He encouraged all to visit to find out what programs were available. For those already in possession of a degree, there are graduate degree programs.

"I'd encourage everybody to come by the education center," said Spruell. "No matter what your level of education currently is, there's something for you here."

The Education Center held sessions on affording college, earning promotion points through higher education, educational counseling, navigating GoArmyEd, navigating USAJobs, and much more.

Today as part of American Education Week, Illesheim Education Center at Storck Barracks held an open house.
