The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is approaching and many Soldiers, Civilian employees, and their Family members will embark on journeys to visit family and friends. Traffic volume on America's highways will increase by 50%, airports will be busy, and inclement weather may influence your journey; be mindful that nearly 40 million people will be traveling over this holiday period.

Traffic accidents are the greatest threat to the safety of our team. As you are preparing your travel plans, I encourage you use the Travel Risk Planning System (TRiPS) online assessment tool at https://trips.safety.army.mil/army/Home.aspx, (CAC/PIV required). Regardless of your holiday plans, please keep these SAFETY precautionary measures in mind:

Pre-travel. Have your vehicle inspected by a competent technician to ensure your vehicle is capable of completing the travel. When planning your route, include contingency time, rest/food stops, and overnight stays. Ensure family or friends are aware of your travel route.

Travel. Buckle up, respect speed limits, avoid texting while driving, and ensure the driver is alert and well-rested. Do not drive after consuming alcohol. Be aware of your surroundings while traveling and drive defensively.

Holiday Activities. Practice safe food preparation. Be mindful of the correct heating temperatures for poultry. If deep-frying a turkey, follow the manufacturer's instructions and watch a "how-to" video to ensure the safety of people and property. Be responsible with any alcohol consumption.

Return Travel. Be on guard against "get-home-itis." Don't rush and make poor decisions in order to get home. Arriving home late is far better than not arriving at all. Slow down, make sound decisions, and use common sense. Your workplace will be waiting when you return -- safely.

Linda and I recognize the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices each of you make ensuring we remain the Army's Premier Provider of Readiness. We ask you to remember our deployed teammates; keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Enjoy a SAFE and well-deserved Thanksgiving holiday!
