WASHINGTON (U.S. Army Public Affairs, Nov. 20, 2015) For the first time, commanders from across the nation sent soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines to light the Diya, a small lamp that is lit in honor of Diwali, during this year's 4th Annual Pentagon Diwali Celebration.

The Diwali celebration is one of many hosted by the Office of the Pentagon Chaplains that supports religious diversity and freedom among the Armed Forces. Filled with prayer, song, and dance, the celebration provides an occasion for those of different faith groups to be given the opportunity to experience the Hindu celebration.

Diwali, considered the Hindu New Year, is a celebration of the festival of lights, where families celebrate the holiday by decorating their homes with colorful adornments, lights, and candles.

Although the 5 day festivity is separated by different traditions, what remains constant is the triumph of light over darkness, and the celebration of life, its enjoyment, and goodness.
