HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Taking a break from their studies, the students of Whitesburg Elementary/Middle School gave a warm welcome to Redstone Senior Commander Lt. Gen. Larry Wyche, who was the Veterans Day program's keynote speaker Monday.

Students filled the school with signs and American flags to welcome Wyche. The Grissom High School JROTC cadets presented the colors, Whitesburg's band and choir played patriotic melodies, students shared speeches of what freedom means, and more than 100 students filled the school's cafeteria to honor Veterans Day.

"I've traveled all around the world but to be a part of something like this could really get me choked up," Wyche said. "To see the support you provide our veterans means so much."

He spoke to the students about what is means to be a veteran and why Americans celebrate Veterans Day.

"Today is a day we remember those who have served and those who still serve," Wyche said. "Every opportunity you have to tell a veteran thank you, please do so."

Wyche referenced a Mark Twain quote that highlights the importance of leaning one's purpose in life. He told the students that no one but themselves can decide their purpose.

"Once you figure out what your purpose is, you will go out and do wonderful things," Wyche said. "Selfless services is not confined to the men and women in uniform."

He recognized the services and accomplishments of the Whitesburg teachers and staff, including Randy Owens, an eighth-grade teacher who served three combat tours in Vietnam.
