JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Military and state government personnel, area business leaders, and University of Washington-Tacoma students and faculty, gathered together to attend a Views on the Pacific Symposium held at William W. Phillip Hall on the UW-T campus in Tacoma, Washington, Oct. 29.

The theme for this symposium was "The Korean Peninsula: Security, Trade and Prosperity in the 21st Century," and it was the fourth in a series of symposia that focuses on President Barack Obama's foreign policy of a "strategic rebalance" to the Asia-Pacific region and "whole of government" approach to stability and security.

"It allowed for an opportunity to participate in a panel discussion specifically on South Korea and their security, economics and prosperity," said Lt. Col. Jaren Price, United States Army War College Fellow, University of Washington. "It also allows an opportunity to get the point-of-view of some really great people [the panelist] from our community and see where they think Korea is going in the future."

Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza, commanding general of I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, was one of four distinguished guests that comprised the panel for the symposium. The others were Moon Duk-Ho, consul general, Korean Consulate General in Seattle, Robert Hamilton, governor Inslee's adviser for trade policy, and Clark W. Sorenson, director, Center for Korean Studies, Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, UW.

"Each of those individuals have a great deal of knowledge to bring to the table," said Price. "It's fascinating to hear all the different view points."

Throughout the symposium, the word "trust" could be heard often and the role it plays between the U.S. and its allies in the Pacific. When Lanza was asked his view, he explained the importance it has in building relationships.

"From a military perspective, I don't think it is as much about trust, as it is about responses," said Lanza. "If something happens, they [other countries] want to know that the U.S. is supporting."

During the symposium, the panelist discussed a variety of topics concerning the Korean peninsula; ranging from regional complexity to the greatest challenges and opportunities.

"It [the symposium] opens up to the community so that they can understand relationships that impact us here in Washington and also the United States as a whole, and what happens to our relationship with those wonderful countries over there," said Price.

The night concluded with Col. Daniel S. Morgan, garrison commander, JBLM, Mark A. Pagano, chancellor, UW-T, and Lanza all coming together to sign Partnership Resolutions, signifying and cementing the commitment between the university and the military's relationship.
