STUTTGART, Germany -- Brig. Gen. Phillip Jolly, director of the U.S. Army Europe's Army Reserve Engagement Cell, represented U.S. Army Europe at an armed forces reception hosted by Baden-Wuerttemberg Minister President Winfried Krestschmann, here, Oct. 27.

More than 300 service members from the armed forces of the United States, Germany, France and other partner nations participated in the event. This number represents only a fraction of the thousands of service members who call Baden-Wuerttemberg home.

Kretschmann held the reception to show support and to honor all service members stationed in Baden-Wuerttemberg, and the event was a visible statement recognizing service members for their efforts in their local communities at home and when deployed abroad.

"I thank all the Soldiers and civilians serving in the armed forces of our lands," Kretschmann said during his speech. "Your service deserves appreciation and recognition."

In addition to Jolly, also in attendance was Marine Maj. Gen. Niel Nelson, commander, Marine Forces Europe and Africa; and Soldiers from the German Bundeswehr, German-French Brigade, and U.S. European and Africa commands.

Among the topics discussed by guest speakers and attendees during the reception were recent deployments and some of the struggles faced by the militaries, to include concerns of fiscal cutbacks and force reductions despite growing European security concerns related to the refugee crisis in Europe.

The ceremony included classical musical performances by the Baden-Wuerttemberg Police Orchestra, followed by speeches from Kretschmann, Nelson, and other keynote speakers. Soldiers then enjoyed a social hour with food and drinks, followed by a ceremony honoring the U.S., French and German flags and national anthems. A short musical performance marked an end to the evening's events festivities.
