REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama -- Lt. Gen. David L. Mann, commanding general, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, conducted a town hall at the Von Braun Complex III auditorium Oct. 21 for members of the command in Huntsville.

Mann addressed several topics including: command current events, operations, nanosatellites, high-energy lasers, space support operations, high-level visitors, surveys, command financial situation and issues brought up during the command's Army Family Action Plan conference.

"It is very important that we continue to develop our workforce in order to provide the necessary capabilities to our nation," Mann stated. "A lot of fantastic things are happening across this command including an increase in our visibility and request for our support.

"There is more to be done, more to get after, and I need your help and your advocacy to make sure people know what you do," he added.

Julie Schumacher, USASMDC/ARSTRAT deputy to the commander, discussed the command organizations, missions, functions and civilian work force. She discussed growing the workforce, both personally and professionally, as well as how to improve production and morale of the SMDC team.

"We have taken a 'deep-dive' on civilian positions and their structure throughout the command so we could get a baseline to see where we were and if there were any issues, trends and workforce development," Schumacher said. "We will continue to keep looking at ways to improve how we develop our workforce and I thank you all for your input."

SMDC Command Sgt. Maj. Jerome Wiggins took a few minutes to talk about the command's Soldiers stationed around the world, discuss the Combined Federal Campaign and remind the workforce about sending holiday packages to Soldiers deployed overseas.

"For you all who have loved ones overseas and are interested in mailing some packages to them you need to know the deadlines in order to get those packages mailed and sent off so they can get to your loved ones in time," Wiggins said.

This session will be followed by a similar event on Oct. 27 at the command's headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Mann ended the town hall with a question and answer period with the audience and a presentation of awards.
