FORT HOOD, Texas -Soldiers of the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, gear up for a month-long rotation to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif. at the Division Rapid Reaction Field and railhead yard, Jan. 7.

Before deploying to the NTC, the Soldiers of the 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st ACB, 1st Cav. Div., along with other supporting units from 1st ACB, must prepare nearly 90 vehicles at the DRRF site for movement to the railhead.

The DRRF is an area where deploying units stage vehicles and make all the necessary preparations for transportation. Once complete, the vehicles are moved to the railhead to be loaded onto a train for movement across country.

"My operation here at the railhead is to get the trucks on the rail so they can go out to California and meet us out there," said Sgt. 1st Class Thomas J. Reid of Company D, 1-227th, who led the railhead operations.

As a safety measure, all Soldiers in the rail yard were required to wear a road guard vest and their helmet. The Soldiers also have to be especially careful about moving on and off the railcars because they're six feet off the ground, said Reid.

"Safety is a big focus," said Reid. "We have a lot of moving vehicles (and) a lot of people who are in front of the vehicles trying to guide them."

After two days of tedious vehicle movement, the operation was completed safely with no one injured, he said.
