ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA (October 11, 2015) -- A memorial quilt, signed by surviving family members of fallen Soldiers and Army Ten-Miler runners, was presented to the U.S. Army Installation Management Command. Brig. Gen. Daniel G. Mitchell, deputy commanding general for IMCOM, at the Army 10-Miler.
Mitchell accepted the quilt on behalf of the command immediately after race at the command's Hooah tent. It was presented by Anita Dominguez, president for Military Survivors & Families First, Inc., a non-profit organization in San Antonio, Texas.
"We are here today to support Army Survivor Outreach Services and to honor our fallen Soldiers and the survivors of our fallen heroes," she said.
At the Army Ten-Miler Expo race participants were asked to sign the memorial quilt at the IMCOM booth. In conjunction to the command's "Run to Honor" campaign, where participants dedicated their runs to fallen service members, the memorial quilt was another way for runners to show their support and respect for the fallen and their surviving family members.
Mitchell was visibly moved by what was written on the quilt.
"If you have a chance, take time to read these messages," he said. "People put a lot of heart and soul in writing them."
The memorial quilt will be permanently displayed in the command's headquarters on Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.
