Our Nation will observe Labor Day on 7 September 2015. Traditionally, Labor Day is a time for relaxation and family gatherings, it is also a time to recognize and reflect on the innovation and heavy-lifting executed by the 65,000 dedicated members of the Army Materiel Command.

For most of us, Labor Day will be our last opportunity to relax with friends and family before the summer ends. Whether you take a trip or spend some quiet time at home, I encourage you to incorporate a SAFETY plan in all of your activities. Remember to use the Travel Risk Planning System (TRiPS) online assessment tool at https://trips.safety.army.mil/army/Home.aspx. This tool helps you identify the risks associated with your travel plans and provides sound recommendations to make your journey successful. Regardless of your holiday plans, please keep these SAFETY precautionary measures in mind:

Car Maintenance- Ensure your vehicle is in good working condition before departing. Have it inspected by a competent and reliable technician.

Drive Defensively- Be alert, be cautious, and stay in control. Limit distractions while driving. Distracted driving can be anything that pulls your attention away from driving, including cell phone use, texting while driving, eating, drinking, and even using in-vehicle technologies.

Respect Speed Limits- Excessive speed causes 500 serious accidents and fatalities nationwide each Labor Day. Allow plenty of time, including frequent breaks, in your travel plans. This will help avoid frustration and diminish the impulse to speed.

Buckle up Before Driving- Always use seat belts and child safety seats and/or restraints correctly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, all children 13 and younger should ride in the back seat. Drivers, parents, everyone is responsible.

Fatigue- Get plenty of rest before starting long trips. Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. You can decrease your travel risks by avoiding late night or early morning travel.

Be responsible…Don't Drink and Drive. Don't mix alcohol and prescription drugs before or while driving; the combination is dangerous to your health, and even more dangerous when operating a vehicle or boat of any type. Designate an alternate driver.

Linda and I recognize the hard work, dedication and sacrifices each of you make ensuring we remain the Army's premier provider of readiness. We ask you to remember our deployed teammates; keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Enjoy a SAFE and well-deserved Labor Day weekend!
