REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Aug. 17, 2015) -- The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center held a Town Hall to discuss the way ahead and important center-related topics August 12.

Leadership, government employees, and contracting support gathered at the Bob Jones Auditorium, as well as via video conference, for the meeting.

The forum created an environment for leadership to address areas such as organizational partnerships, contracts, budget, and human capital strategy.

AMRDEC Director James Lackey specifically addressed the importance of maintaining a strong workforce despite current hiring restraints.

"We recognize our most important commodity at AMRDEC is our people," said Lackey. "Yes, we have great capabilities, great facilities, great labs, but it would not happen without the people. It is critical that we retain the talent bench in house."

Lackey said the center will continue to invest in the community's youth through its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics outreach program, communicating to upcoming generations about AMRDEC's current capabilities as well as the needs for a progressive future.

"We will continue to push through the STEM pipeline. The more we let the external world know about who we are, the more prepared we are to bring on the talent as our aging workforce retires."

Following his opening remarks, the individual directorates presented their accomplishments and successes over the past six months.

AMRDEC's newest SES and director of the Engineering Directorate, Michael Bieri spoke highly of the center's positive impact on Team Redstone, offering value engineering and life cycle cost reduction as an example. ED is the command VE and LCCR manager for the Aviation and Missile Command and has consecutively exceeded its financial goals for the past 29 years. AMRDEC has contributed significantly to the success of the program, explained Bieri.

"I've always been impressed with the abilities of not only ED, but the entire center," Bieri said. "I'm happy to be on board."

During the meeting, employees were encouraged to utilize the recently established suggestion box located on the internal AMRDEC site. This avenue creates a direct line of correspondence, allowing employees to communicate their opinions and questions electronically to the director. Within one week's time, submissions will be addressed and future action steps taken if necessary.

Lackey maintained this will be instrumental in developing and improving internal communication.

"If you have any great ideas, any comments, any suggestions, please provide. My role here is here to serve and support you."

The Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers.

RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness -- technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection, and sustainment -- to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
