FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Aug. 6, 2015) -- The beginning of a new school year is upon us, and the final days of summer break are coming to an end.

This exciting period of time has parents scrambling, teachers planning and includes end-of-summer Family or social events.

While there are many activities and hurried preparations, we ask that you slow down and practice safety measures at every turn.

One accident can change a life.

Please watch out for one another, take precautionary measures and have heightened situational awareness, especially around school zones, crossing areas, parking lots and bus stops.

Drivers, be aware of your surroundings at all times, particularly around areas where children are congregated.

If you have children, teach them the proper way to cross a road or street and to be careful, even in parking lots or streets with parked cars.

As the school year begins, share in the excitement, but do it with safety in mind.

Every member of our team of teams is important, and we ask that you place your focus on safety as we conclude the summer and begin a new school year.

We are proud to serve with you.

Army Strong.

(Editor's note: Savre is the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general. Ward is the MSCoE and Fort Leonard Wood command sergeant major.)
