FORT SILL, Okla. (July 16, 2015) -- More than 1,500 people stepped out of their air-conditioned homes, July 11, to enjoy an afternoon at Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area for Military Appreciation Day.

Military members and their families were invited to come and enjoy paddle boats, canoes, rock climbing, miniature golf, inflatable bounce houses and a free meal of hot dogs, hamburgers chips and cookies provided by the Patriot Club staff. Despite the number of people in attendance, the lines for the activities were short and moved quickly.

"The event was a co-op with the Family (Morale Welfare and Recreation office) to recognize our military and civilian families for their dedication and contributions to the success of the Lawton-Fort Sill community," said Mark Houseman, LETRA program manager. "Military Appreciation Day is always free. We wanted to encourage people to come out, eat food and drink and enjoy the activities."

The day began with the 30th Air Defense Artillery Brigade's Extreme All-Terrain Run which covered approximately four and a half miles. After the run some racers chose to stay until the appreciation day activities began at 10 a.m.

Eight vendors set up on the main road with giveaways and contests to win items ranging from new military boots to a grill.

Throughout the event, music played in the background, provided by the 77th Army band, with assistance from the 156th National Guard Band out of Louisiana. They were followed by the Ken Morrow Band that played at the event last year.

"The total count was 1,527 people who attended, and we think it went great," Houseman said. "We got good feedback from those who came. There were other events going on in the area so we are happy with the turnout we had this year."
