REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (July 13, 2015) -- Over 300 government civilians were awarded for their performance and service to the Software Engineering Directorate July 9 at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

The SED, a subordinate directorate of the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center, renewed its institution of the SED Awards Program to recognize the accomplishments of government employees and their contributions to the organization.

"It is a privilege to honor our employees for their hard work and dedication," said Terrence Clay, SED business management chief and program committee member. "The awards program is a great venue to encourage morale and establish a standard. We see this as an opportunity to communicate the values of the directorate."

As an Army life cycle software engineering center, the SED supports the acquisition, research, development, and sustainment of some of the nation's most sophisticated weapon systems. The SED maintains expertise in the Army's prevailing policies and practices in cyber security and information assurance, as well as supporting areas of joint interoperability testing, gaming and software and system engineering.

Program analyst and program committee member, Deane McKay credits human resources as the SED's source of success and its main asset.

"Without our workforce, the SED would not be able to accomplish some of its milestones nor serve its customers optimally," McKay said. "They generate long-term value. The creation of the SED Awards Program was intended to echo its belief in rewarding those who contribute in a myriad of ways to the organization's success."

This year, the organization introduced two new award categories including "Take a Bow" and "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty." Take a bow recognizes employees who exemplify commitment to professional growth and development, as well as completed a certification program, degree or specialized training. The ABCD award recognizes any employee who demonstrates performance beyond expectation during a significant event or activity.

Other awards included service awards, special act awards, SES note awards and time off awards. Michelle Tailor was also commended for her recognition as the AMRDEC Employee of the Month, May 2015.

According to the program committee, the purpose behind instituting the awards program is to improve performance, increase organizational awareness, and promote recognition opportunities. The SED intends on hosting an awards program bi-annually to award its employees.

The Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers.

RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness -- technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection, and sustainment -- to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
