REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama -- Lt. Gen. David L. Mann, commanding general, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, conducted a town hall at the Von Braun Complex III auditorium Thursday morning for members of the in Huntsville.

Mann addressed the Army force structure reduction and stationing decisions announced by the Army later in the day.

"I have not been provided any numbers or impacts on the command by headquarters, Department of the Army, but I am cautiously optimistic that the impact will be minimal," Mann stated.

The Army announced Thursday afternoon a troop reduction of 40,000 Soldiers and 17,000 civilian positions in the next two years. These reductions will put the Army at its goal of reducing to 450,000 active duty Soldiers by fiscal year 2017.

Julie Schumacher, deputy to the commander, discussed the command civilian work force development efforts, which are focused on four areas: increase work force knowledge of existing opportunities; establish initial metrics/dashboard; quick wins; and survey other organizations for best practices.

Schumacher detailed the upcoming mentoring event scheduled for July 14 in Huntsville stating that more than 100 employees have signed up for this event. Areas to be covered include sharing perspectives on leadership; professional development; and establishing a culture of mentoring throughout the command. This session will be followed by a similar event on Aug. 19 at the command's headquarters in Colorado Springs.

As part of the new format for town halls, the Future Warfare Center provided an update on their recent reorganization and the mission and initiatives they are working on.

Mann ended the town hall with a question and answer period with the audience and the presentation of awards.
