Soldiers of U.S. Army engineer units from the Tennessee and Alabama National Guard are in Romania and Bulgaria working on military infrastructure projects as part of Operation Resolute Castle 15.

Operation Resolute Castle is an Army Europe-led multinational operation held at the Cincu Training Area, Romania and the Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria from June thru Sept. 2015. The operation will include more than 1,000 participants from the Alabama and Tennessee Army National Guard as they work to plan, coordinate, construct and improve infrastructure for ranges and training areas with their partners.

"Resolute Castle is a rare opportunity for us to stand side by side with our State Partnership Program partner in Romania," said Lt. Col. Shawn Arnold, commander, 877th Engineer Battalion, Alabama National Guard.

The State Partnership Program began in 1991 as a U.S. Army European Command initiative to assist nations emerging from the former Soviet Bloc. It is now a critical component of U.S. security cooperation. It is a low-cost program that ties together the National Guard Bureau, the State Department, and state adjutant generals in support of geographic combatant commanders, cooperation objectives, and policy goals.

This year Operation Resolute Castle is part of the larger Operation Atlantic Resolve. Operation Atlantic Resolve is a demonstration of continued U.S. commitment to the collective security of NATO and to enduring peace and stability in the region, in light of Russia's illegal actions in Ukraine.

Army Europe is leading the Operation Atlantic Resolve enhanced land force multinational training and security cooperation activities taking place across Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria to ensure multinational interoperability, strengthen relationships among allied militaries, contribute to regional stability and demonstrate U.S. commitment to NATO.

In light of Russia's illegal actions in Ukraine, Operation Atlantic Resolve is a visible demonstration of U.S. commitment to the security of NATO allies. In meeting our global security commitments, the United States must have strong, committed and capable allies, which is why we have fought, exercised and trained with our European allies for the past 70 years. The U.S.-European strategic partnership is built on a foundation of shared values, experiences and interests in a Europe that is stable and prosperous.
