The Command and General Staff College selected 57 faculty members for academic promotion for the academic year 2015-2016 that begins on August 10. Academic promotion recognizes excellence in the faculty characterized by sustained superior performance across the four domains of faculty development--teaching, scholarship, service and faculty development.
Newly promoted Professor O. Shawn Cupp said, "Promotion to Professor is the fulfillment of an academic goal I set for myself upon retirement from the United States Army. I would like to believe that I am an example for my peers, both military and civilian within our department." He continued, "this promotion validates my commitment to academic endeavors and self-development. Expectations for my service will increase based upon this promotion. I fully understand that my department and CGSC will require more of me in the future. Nevertheless, I hope recognition by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College like this and acknowledgement throughout worldwide academia will continue for all of my peers as we transform to the Army University construct."
"I would like to thank my mentors, peers, and students for enabling me to achieve this academic milestone." He added, "However; my family has endured the most by allowing me to finish my degree, serve in re-greening and deployment TDYs, and complete my book manuscript. They are the primary reason I was able to achieve this goal."
"Progression through academic ranks is somewhat like promotions in the Army. They are sequential, standards are usually known, and manner of service is an important component to progression," said Cupp. "However; the skills, achievements, and impact on others is greater with this promotion based upon the sacred position I hold within this organization. I have touched in some way over 1900 students through my service as both a military and civilian instructor at CGSC. My academic progress to Professor is a testimony to those experiences and efforts."
Fellow professor William Kautt agreed, "To me, academic promotion is an important part of the process of self-improvement. We all need goals and this is by no means the end of advancement, and, while it is a great honor; it is part of the on-going journey towards becoming better than what I am. My scholarship and service will continue and [I will] continue to improve."
Professor Ed Coss, Fort Belvoir extension campus, said his department, Department of Military History, sets high standards and supports faculty along their professional progression. "Meeting those metrics and delivering every day to the students is my goal," he said. "The academic advancement reflects many years of research, publication, and teaching. Working one paper and one conference at a time to establish such a [exalted] professional reputation remains my long-term objective. The journey has been a grand adventure!"
The individuals, identified for promotion performed a self-assessment of their preparation for the next academic rank and then gained the support of their department and/or school directors. The candidates for associate professor and professor of discipline also went before an advisory committee of their peers, who provided the Dean of Academics and the college's Deputy Commandant a recommendation from the faculty perspective.
"These promotions are very visible statements of the confidence that the College leadership and the faculty have in the future potential of the individuals selected. I extend my congratulations to each one of them and look forward to watching their continued performance in support of the mission of CGSC," said Col. Leona Knight, Acting Deputy Commandant, in announcing the promotions.

Promotion to Professor requires an earned doctorate, successful teaching for typically six years at the associate professor level or higher, a distinguished record of scholarship, and a sustained record of faculty development.
