FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- The U.S. Army's 240th birthday is Sunday but 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) wasted no time getting the party started.
Leaders and Soldiers of the command celebrated at the 1st TSC's headquarters in true Army tradition Thursday with morning formation, physical training and cake.
Lt. Col. Landis Maddox, Special Troops Battalion commander, along with Pvt. Walter Scott, youngest Soldier in 1st TSC, and Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Carol Highsmith, oldest First Team Soldier, took part in a cake-cutting ceremony before hitting the streets of East Fort Bragg for their PT run.
Two-hundred and forty years ago, our nation's leaders established the Continental Army, beginning a rich heritage of successfully defending this great country and her citizens, said Maddox. Today, we celebrate the continued honor, loyalty and bravery of our Soldiers in this noble calling.
The theme for this year's U.S. Army's birthday is "240 Years of Selfless Service to the Nation."
Nineteen-year-old Scott, a network operator in the 1st TSC and a native of Smithfield, Virginia, said he felt honored to be a part of the birthday celebration and to be the youngest Soldier in the command. The sweetest part of his day was not his time in the spotlight or singing the birthday song with fellow First Team Soldiers.
"The cake was amazing!" he said.
