• FORT BLISS, Texas--The Space Shuttle Endeavour, and its transporting 747, stopped for a two-hour refuel at Fort Bliss\' Biggs Army Airfield on Dec. 10, during the first leg of a cross-country flight from Edwards Air Force Base in California to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Endeavor is returning from mission STS 126, which delivered life-support supplies and equipment to upgrade and expand the space station future capabilities from a three-person crew to a six-person crew. The 747 burns almost one gallon of fuel per plane length while carrying the orbiter Endeavor across the United States. Due to the weight of the combined aircrafts; it takes longer to safely stop, so a longer runway is needed and Biggs is the largest airfield in the Army inventory. Fort Bliss Base operations conducts daily airfield inspections, repairs and training to continually keep the airfield in a pristine and safe condition in order to support their multiple missions. The last Endeavor transport stopped at Biggs in 1992.
