WASHINGTON (June 1, 2015) -- His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Kingdom of the Netherlands participated in an Armed Forces Full Honors Wreath Laying Ceremony held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery, Va.

The royal couple was escorted by Maj. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, Joint Force Headquarter-National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington commanding general.

Their majesties paid tribute to the American men and women who sacrificed their lives 70 years ago liberating Europe and the Netherlands during World War II.

According to the State Department, the U.S. partnership with the Netherlands dates back to the American Revolution, which the Netherlands supported. The United States established diplomatic relations with the Netherlands in 1782; one of our oldest, continuous bilateral relationships.

Later that day, The King and Queen met with President Barack Obama to have a working dinner. This is their royal highnesses first visit to the United States since ascending to the throne in April 2013.
