As Memorial Day weekend approaches, swimming facilities on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall are gearing up their summer programming.
The Fort Myer Officers' Club swimming facilities will have their grand opening May 25, in correlation with the Memorial Day pool party and picnic.
Maintenance and repairs were performed on the Figure 8 pool, its water slides and the 25-meter pool starting in February, said Todd Hopkins, recreational specialist and special events coordinator with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
Now that those repairs and improvements are complete, families can enjoy the spiffed-up Officers' Club facilities during FMWR's many aquatic programs, including poolside cookouts for Memorial Day, Father's Day, July 4 and Labor Day.
The Memorial Day kickoff is scheduled for May 25 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature a DJ, a moon bounce and face painting. A variety of food will be available for purchase from noon until 5 p.m. The event is open to all who hold pool or combination passes and their guests. Reservations are not required, and members' guests will pay $10 at the door. For more information about the party, call 703-696-5147.
FMWR's popular Dive-In Movie series also makes its return this year, during which patrons are welcome to float in the pool or lounge on the deck and enjoy a family-friendly movie. The series this year starts with a showing of "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" (rated PG, 92 minutes long) on June 20; "The Goonies" (rated PG, 114 minutes long) on July 18; and "Penguins of Madagascar: The Movie" (rated PG, 92 minutes long) on Aug. 1.
Hopkins was particularly excited about "The Goonies," noting that about 100 people attended the last time he screened the movie.
Patrons should plan to bring their own flotation devices, towels or chairs. Gates open at 8:15 p.m. and showtimes are at 9 p.m.
"People can bring their own flotation devices - a raft or something like that - and swim before the movie starts, then once the movie starts, watch from the flotation or from a lounge chair on the deck," Hopkins said.
In the event of severe weather, showings will be cancelled, Hopkins said, noting that the call is typically made around 4 p.m.
Hopkins also said the Fort Myer Community Pool (located behind Spates Community Club) will remain closed again this year due to budgetary restrictions.
"It's been a lot of hard work, a lot of behind the scenes stuff trying to get organized," Hopkins said, but he was confident that it would be another summer of fun for patrons and families.
The pool season will conclude Sept. 12 with the annual Doggie Dip, which allows patrons to bring Fido for a swim.

The Maj. Douglas A. Zembiec Pool on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base will also begin summer operations May 25, said Matthew Jongema, aquatics program director.
A full schedule of summer events at Zembiec Pool will be made available in the coming weeks, he said.
Events already on the docket include the Summer Swim Challenge, held on the last Thursdays in June, July and August from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The breaststroke competition will be held June 25; freestyle will be held July 30; and backstroke will be held Aug. 27.
Aqua Aerobics Week is scheduled for July 6 through 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. The Half Iron Swim will take place Aug. 19 from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
