HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- As the school year draws to an end, Brig. Gen. Edward Daly, chief of staff of the Army Materiel Command, traveled to University Place Elementary School to praise the student's hard work in their afterschool program May 19.

The engagement was part of the command's Adopt a School program, which was revitalized this year. Throughout the school year AMC employees spent one-hour a week at University Place tutoring and mentoring students.

"Believe in yourself and dream big," said Daly to the nearly 30 students. "If you work hard every day and make smart choices, there is no limit to what you can accomplish."

University Place's motto is "Where choices matter," and Daly echoed that as he shared his secrets to success and praised the students for setting a good example for their classmates and siblings.

"You should always set the example," said Daly. "Others are always watching to see how hard you work and what you've achieved. Through that, you are inspiring them to do the same and becoming a role model."

The students worked one-on-one with mentors throughout the community including AMC, Village of Promise and local churches.

"I liked being a part of the program," said Jaquez Kelly, a University Place 5th grader. "I really liked working with my mentor, who helped me with my homework and study for tests."

Daly presented the students certificates and following his last words of advice "to take time for fun," the group had a party.
