U.S. Army Garrison - Detroit Arsenal, Mich. -- The Detroit Arsenal held a ceremony Friday as part of Peace Officer's Memorial Day to pay tribute to the service that peace officers provide our nation every day and for those officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

"These officers put themselves at risk every day in order to help keep us safe," said Maj. Gen. Gwen Bingham, senior commander at the Detroit Arsenal. "We need to take the time to thank them whenever we can."

The ceremony was held on the south side of Building 230 where a blooming Crabapple tree was planted in memory of those officers who have lost their lives. Bingham had all peace officers in crowd stand in front of the tree while she was speaking about the sacrifices and good work that they do.

"There has been a lot in the news lately about our nation's police officers and the struggles they are going through," said Bingham. She added that people need to know that all officers are not bad and that all should be given the benefit of the doubt that they are good officers there to help us when we interact with them. She personally thanked each of them for their service and led the crowd of nearly 100 in a round of applause for the officers.

After speaking the general; Catherine Miller, acting garrison manager; and Cpl. Christopher Anderson, Detroit Arsenal police officer, placed the final few shovels full of dirt around the base of the tree to wrap up the tree planting process. The general and Anderson also placed a plaque at the base of the tree with the words, "In Remembrance of All Fallen Peace Officers -- Protect and Serve."

Each year, Americans set aside a week to salute the men and women who do the dangerous and often thankless work of protecting their communities. During Peace Officers Memorial Day, the country honors those who protect and serve every minute of every hour of every day. We honor the courageous officers who devoted themselves so fully, that in the process they laid down their lives.

Following the ceremony, Miller acknowledge the selfless service, duty and personal courage of our Detroit Arsenal law enforcement. "The danger is real and they stand at those gates every day to protect this installation," she said. "It is our job to give them the tools and support they need to accomplish that mission. I thank them for what they do every day to keep this installation safe."
