ANSBACH, Germany (May 13, 2015) -- U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach's Safety Office hosted its Spring/Summer Safety Day in and around the Bismarck Movie Theater recently.

Several installation agencies collaborated on the seasonal event to teach local national and U.S. employees the importance of safety during spring and summer activities.

"The event was held to heighten safety awareness and provide safety tips to ensure everyone remains safe during the spring/summer months," said Ta'Vares Hickey, safety manager of the U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Safety Office.

The event began with briefings from Katterbach Army Health Clinic Physical therapist; Outdoor Recreation; Child, Youth and School Services; the community health nurse; the fire department; and the garrison safety staff on a variety of topics including sports injury prevention, hot weather injury prevention, tick prevention and treatment, babysitting safety, preventing grease fires, and general summer safety tips such as home safety and outdoor safety.

The Franconian area is home to a variety of ticks. Liz Schuster-Schoaf, the community health nurse, gave a briefing on tick bite prevention.

"The brief really gave me some insight on tick bite prevention and what to do in case I've been bitten," said Richard Gross, USAG Ansbach Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program counselor.

The Safety Office gave the audience a briefing on off-duty safety specific to warm weather. The briefings encompassed topics on home safety, outdoor safety and safety while traveling.

"The briefing was great," said Walter Mattil, chief of the Directorate of Public Works. "I received some good information on lifeguards versus lifesavers in Germany."

Participants got a chance to witness the deadly effects of a grease fire doused with water and a spray can heated under a fire.

"Though it was a small pot used in a open area it really drove home the fact what could happened if this sort of thing happened in a small kitchen," said John O'Brien, chief of the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security.

Hickey said the briefings met their goals because participants walked away with some vital tips to ensure their safety throughout the spring and summer months.
